Stanley Kwan

Stanley Kwan (; born October 9, 1957) is a Hong Kong film director and producer.Kwan was born in Hong Kong, and he landed a job at the TVB after receiving a mass communications degree at Hong Kong Baptist College. Kwan's first film was Women (1985), which starred Chow Yun-Fat, and was a big box-office success. Kwan's films often deal sympathetically with the plight of women and their struggles with romantic affairs of the heart. Rouge (1987), Full Moon in New York (1989), Centre Stage (1992; aka Actress), a biopic on silent film star Ruan Lingyu and Everlasting Regret (2005), are all such typical Kwan films. Red Rose White Rose (1994) is an adaptation of an Eileen Chang novel.

Stanley Kwan (關錦鵬) (geboren am 9. Oktober 1957 in Hongkong) gehört neben Wong Kar-Wai zu den bedeutendsten Regisseuren der sogenannten Zweiten Welle (Nouvelle Vague) des Hongkong-Kinos.Sein Regiedebüt Women (女人心) 1985 war ein großer Box Office-Hit in Hongkong, mit dem noch unbekannten Chow Yun-Fat. Internationalen Erfolg erlangte Kwan durch seinen dritten Film Rouge/The Legend of Fleur (胭脂扣) 1988, es wird die Geschichte einer Kurtisane erzählt, die 1930 Selbstmord begeht und im Jahr 1987 als Geist ihren Geliebten sucht. In seinem Dokumentarfilm "yang&yin: gender in chinese cinema" outet er sich gegen Ende als schwul.
