It is a quantum field theory developed between 1970 and 1973 which is consistent with both quantum mechanics and special relativity. To date, almost all experimental tests of the three forces described by the Standard Model have agreed with its predictions. However, the Standard Model falls short of being a complete theory of fundamental interactions, primarily because of its lack of inclusion of gravity, the fourth known fundamental interaction, but also because of the large number of numerical parameters (such as masses and coupling constants) that must be put "by hand" into the theory (rather than being derived from first principles).

Le modèle standard de la physique des particules est une théorie qui décrit les interactions forte, faible et électromagnétique, ainsi que l'ensemble des particules élémentaires qui constituent la matière. Développé entre les années 1970 et 1973, c'est une théorie quantique des champs qui est naturellement compatible avec les principes de la mécanique quantique et de la relativité. À ce jour (2008) l'ensemble des tests expérimentaux des trois forces fondamentales décrites par le modèle standard ont révélé un bon accord avec les prédictions. Une simulation d'une durée de trois ans sur un ordinateur puissant a révélé en 2008 une adéquation aux observations meilleure encore que ce qui était supposé. Pour autant, le modèle standard ne constitue pas une théorie complète des interactions fondamentales, principalement parce qu'il ne décrit pas la force de gravitation.

Das Standardmodell der Elementarteilchenphysik (SM) ist eine physikalische Theorie, welche die bekannten Elementarteilchen und Wechselwirkungen zwischen diesen beschreibt. Die drei vom Standardmodell beschriebenen Wechselwirkungen sind die starke Wechselwirkung, die schwache Wechselwirkung und die elektromagnetische Wechselwirkung. Fast alle Ergebnisse teilchenphysikalischer Experimente stimmen mit den Vorhersagen des Standardmodells überein.

Model Standardowy – jest  teorią fizyki cząstek podstawowych, zwanych też cząstkami elementarnymi, które są podstawowymi składnikami każdej materii. Opisuje trzy z czterech (z wyjątkiem grawitacji) oddziaływań podstawowych: oddziaływanie elektromagnetyczne, oddziaływanie słabe, oddziaływanie silne. Il Modello Standard è una teoria che descrive tutte le particelle elementari ad oggi note e tre delle quattro forze fondamentali note, ossia le interazioni forti, quelle elettromagnetiche e quelle deboli (queste ultime due unificate nell'interazione elettrodebole). Si tratta di una teoria di campo quantistica, coerente sia con la meccanica quantistica che con la relatività speciale.
