A
binary star system in which the stars are too close to one another to be observed as separate stars. However, when their spectra are studied, two spectral types of emission lines may be visible, indicating that two separate stars are present. The spectral lines will also change wavelength, via the Doppler effect, as the stars orbit one another and this can be observed.
