The US Federal Bureau of Prisons, or BOP for short, is a component of the US Department of Justice (DOJ). The BOP is responsible for maintaining the custody of anyone convicted of committing a federal crime. To achieve this goal, the BOP maintains a number of correctional facilities, which are divided into six regions, throughout the US. These facilities house approximately 90,000 inmates of varying security levels. Facilities are designated as either minimum, medium, maximum, or the most recent addition, super max.

Special Operations Response Teams SORT (deutsch etwa: Spezialinterventionseinheiten) gehören zu einer Reihe taktischer Spezialeinheiten, welche vom US-Bundesamt für Gefängnisse Federal Bureau of Prisons BOP ins Leben gerufen wurden, um die Sicherheit innerhalb staatlich geführter Strafanstalten zu gewährleisten. SOR-Teams sind bestausgebildete taktische Einheiten für die Intervention bei Unruhen oder Aufständen innerhalb staatlicher Haftanstalten, bei Angriffen bzw. Tätlichkeiten von Insassen gegen Personal oder von Insassen untereinander, Ausbrüchen oder Ausbruchsversuchen und Geiselnahmen; zudem unterstützen sie andere Justizvollzugsbehörden bei Notfällen.
