Sparta (Doric Σπάρτα; Attic  Spartē), or Lacedaemon, was a prominent city-state in ancient Greece, situated on the banks of the River Eurotas in Laconia, in south-eastern Peloponnese. It emerged as a political entity around the 10th century BC, when the invading Dorians subjugated the local, non-Dorian population. From c. 650 BC it rose to become the dominant military land-power in ancient Greece.

Das antike Sparta war der Hauptort der peloponnesischen Landschaft Lakonien und des antiken Staates der Lakedaimonier, im Süden der Peloponnes. Im Deutschen wird Sparta meist als Synonym für den lakedaimonischen Staat gebraucht. Die Stadt wird als eine griechische Polis bezeichnet, obgleich sie sich in wesentlichen Merkmalen davon unterschied. Sparta hatte eine einzigartige Staatsordnung und war in der Antike für seine Militärmacht berühmt.
