For other uses see Sparta (disambiguation). Sparta (Doric: Spártā, Attic: Spártē) was a Dorian Greek military state, originally centered in Laconia. As a city-state devoted to military training, Sparta possessed the most formidable army in the Greek world, and after achieving notable victories over the Athenian and Persian Empires, regarded itself as the natural protector of Greece. Laconia or Lacedaemon  was the name of the wider city-state centered at the city of Sparta, though the name "Sparta" is now used for both. The Kings of Sparta were believed to be the direct descendants of Heracles.

Sparta (Standardaltgriechisch (Attisch) Σπάρτη Spártē (neugriechische Aussprache: Spárti), im alten dorischen Dialekt: Σπάρτα Spártā; zu klassischen Zeiten auch vermehrt „Λακεδαίμων“ Lakedaimōn), in der Antike Hauptstadt der peloponnesischen Landschaft Lakonien und des spartanischen Staates (genau: Staat der Lakedaimonier), lag auf den letzten Ausläufern des Taygetos-Gebirges und dicht am rechten Ufer des Flusses Eurotas.

Sparta (gr.  Sparte, Lakedaimon, Lacedemon) to starożytne miasto, oraz terytorium polis w południowej Grecji, na półwyspie Peloponez, główny ośrodek miejski Lakonii. Nowożytną Spartę zamieszkuje około 18,1 tys. ludzi (stan z roku 2005). Miasto jest stolicą prefektury  Lakonia.

Sparta (in greco attico , Sparte; in dorico , Spárta), è una città della Grecia situata nel Peloponneso meridionale, sulla destra del fiume Eurota tra i rilievi del Parnone a est e del Taigeto a ovest. Fra le protagoniste della storia della Grecia antica, principale polis rivale di Atene, oggi è una città di circa 18.000 abitanti, capoluogo del nomo della Laconia, modesto centro industriale e commerciale.
