SPAR
This article is about the convenience store. For other uses, see Spar (disambiguation). SPAR is an international retail franchise comprising over 13,700 stores in 33 countries. It was founded in the Netherlands in 1932, operating on a principle similar to co-operative stores elsewhere, with retailers grouping together to get bulk discounts from suppliers/wholesalers. In 1953 an International SPAR office was opened in Amsterdam to control and further develop the organisation throughout Europe and other continents. See www.spar-international.com for more details.

Spar
For other uses, see Spar (disambiguation). In sailing, a spar is a round pole of wood or metal used on a sailing ship. In modern usage it almost always refers to the mast, but historically the term was also used for booms, gaffsyards, etc. Spars of all types are used in the rigging of sailing ships to resist compressive and bending forces, and to provide support for the sails.
