Spanish Empire

The Spanish Empire refer to territories formerly colonized by Spain. It was also one of the largest global empire in history. In the  15th and 16th centuries Spain was in the vanguard of European global exploration and colonial expansion and the opening of trade routes across the oceans, with trade flourishing across the Atlantic Ocean between Spain and the America and across the Pacific Ocean between Asia-Pacific and Mexico via the Philippines. Conquistadors toppled the Aztec, Inca, and Maya civilizations, and laid claim to vast stretches of land in North and South America. For a time, the Spanish Empire dominated the oceans with its experienced navy, was the foremost global power, and ruled the European battlefield with its fearsome and well trained infantry, the . Spain enjoyed a cultural golden age in the 16th and 17th centuries.

L'empire colonial espagnol est, avec l'empire colonial portugais, le premier empire colonial occidental. Au cours des et , l'Espagne s'arroge un immense territoire réparti entre les Amériques, l'Asie du Sud-Est et les comptoirs portugais en Inde et en Afrique lors de l’Union ibérique entre 1581 et 1640. Ces comptoirs reviendront au Portugal après 1640. Á la fin du , la Castille et le Portugal sont à l'avant-garde des grandes découvertes puis inaugurent l’ère de la colonisation européenne. L'extension maximale de l'empire coïncide avec le Siècle d'or espagnol et les règnes de Charles Quint à Philippe IV.

Spanien besaß ein großes Kolonialreich, das jedoch im Gegensatz zum französischen und britischen Reich größtenteils aus amerikanischen Landflächen bestand. Die ersten Kolonien wurden Ende des 15. Jahrhunderts erworben, die letzten gingen im 20. Jahrhundert verloren.Als Anfang des spanischen Kolonialismus kann man die systematischen Eroberungen der Krone Aragon im Mittelmeerraum im 13. und 14. Jahrhundert ansetzen, dabei wurden unter anderem Neapel-Sizilien, Sardinien und sogar Gebiete im heutigen Griechenland in das Reich eingegliedert. Dabei stieß man häufig mit dem expandierenden Osmanischen Reich (siehe: Herzogtum Neopatria) und den italienischen Seerepubliken Genua und Pisa zusammen (siehe: Korsika), die Aragonien viele Gebiete und Kolonien streitig machten. Erst mit der Vereinigung Aragoniens und Kastilien durch die Heirat Isabella I. von Kastilien mit Ferdinand II. von Aragón 1469 begann man sich zunehmend für Entdeckungsfahrten in westlicher Richtung zu interessieren. Ein weiterer Grund war auch, dem portugiesischen Konkurrenten möglichst zuvor zu kommen.

Os espanhóis começaram as suas explorações pelo ocidente, com a descoberta das “Índias Ocidentais” por Cristóvão Colombo, em 1492 e iniciaram imediatamente a colonização forçada do continente americano. Em meados do século XVI, a Espanha controlava quase toda a zona costeira das Américas, desde o Alasca à Patagónia, no ocidente, e desde o actual estado estadunidense da Geórgia, toda a América Central e o Caribe até à Argentina – com excepção do Brasil, que Portugal tinha conseguido manter graças à mediação do Papa (ver Tratado de Tordesilhas).
