Southern Europe

Southern Europe or sometimes Mediterranean Europe is a region of the European continent. There is no clear definition of the term which can vary depending on whether geographic, cultural, linguistic or historical factors are taken into account. It is generally agreed that Spain, Portugal, Italy and Greece, more generally the Mediterranean countries of the European continent, are part of Southern Europe. The South of France and the 3% of Turkish territory within European lands are also included in most definitions of the term.

Südeuropa ist eine zusammenfassende Bezeichnung für die Staaten Portugal, Spanien, Andorra, Monaco, Italien, San Marino, die Vatikanstadt und Malta (wie auch Gibraltar, Ceuta und Melilla). Frankreich, das eigentlich stets zur Gänze zu Westeuropa gerechnet wird, nimmt dabei eine Sonderstellung ein. Der Süden Frankreichs wird geographisch zu Südeuropa gerechnet. In der Geographie hat sich dafür der Fachbegriff Le Midi eingebürgert.

Europa Południowa (Europa Śródziemnomorska) - nazwa stosowana dla określenia państw trzech wielkich półwyspów na południu Europy: Iberyjskiego, Apenińskiego i Bałkańskiego. Są to następujące państwa: Portugalia, Hiszpania, Andora, Włochy, San Marino, Watykan, Malta, Chorwacja, Bośnia i Hercegowina, Serbia, Czarnogóra, Kosowo, Macedonia, Albania, Bułgaria, Rumunia, Grecja i niewielka część Turcji, zajmujące powierzchnię około 1,43 mln km2, z liczbą ludności sięgająca 163 mln mieszkańców (2001).

Zuid-Europa is het zuidelijk deel van Europa. Het omvat met name de Europese landen die grenzen aan de Middellandse Zee. Het begrip Zuid-Europa heeft echter geen officiële status, welke gebieden en landen er toe behoren is daarom vatbaar voor discussie. De Verenigde Naties hanteren bijvoorbeeld een andere definitie van de regio Zuid-Europa dan de Bosatlas dat doet.
