Southern Caucasus

South Caucasus, also referred to as Transcaucasia or Transcaucasus, is the southern portion of the Caucasus region between Europe and Asia, extending from the Greater Caucasus to the Turkish and Iranian borders, between the Black and Caspian Seas. The area includes the Colchis Lowland, Kura Lowland, Talysh Mountains, Lenkoran Lowland, Caucasus Minor, and Javakheti-Armenian Uplands. All of Armenia is in Transcaucasia; the majority of Georgia and Azerbaijan, including the exclave of Naxçivan, fall within this area. The countries of the region are producers of oil, manganese ore, tea, citrus fruits, and wine.

La Transcaucasie ou Caucase du Sud correspond à un espace géographique du sud du Caucase composé de la Géorgie, de l'Arménie et de l'Azerbaïdjan. Délimitée au nord par la Ciscaucasie, elle a pour voisins méridionaux la Turquie et l'Iran et est bordée à l'ouest par la mer Noire et à l'est par la mer Caspienne. Depuis la fin des années 1980, la région est le théâtre de conflits interethninques dans la république azerbaïdjanaise du Haut-Karabagh ou encore dans les républiques géorgiennes d'Abkhazie et d'Ossétie du Sud. Les États de Transcaucasie se sont rapprochés de l'Union européenne en adhérant au Conseil de l'Europe au début des années 2000. En 2005 le Conseil de l'Union européenne a conclu qu'il était nécessaire de les inclure dans la politique européenne de voisinage.

Transkaukasien bezeichnet den Teil Kaukasiens südlich der Hauptkette des Großen Kaukasus.Politisch gehören zu Transkaukasien die Länder Armenien, Georgien und Aserbaidschan. Geographisch umfasst es den größten Teil der Südabdachung des Großen Kaukasus, die Kolchische Tiefebene, die Kuraniederung, den Kleinen Kaukasus, das Dshawater-Armenische Bergland, die Talyschberge und die Lenkoraner Niederung. Als politische Einheit bestand zwischen 1922 und 1936 die Transkaukasische SFSR innerhalb der Sowjetunion.

Kaukaz Południowy (Zakaukazja, Zakaukazie, Transkaukazja) - nazwa stosowana w odniesieniu do trzech państw powstałych w wyniku rozpadu Związku Radzieckiego, położonych na południe od głównego pasma Kaukazu tzw. Wielkiego Kaukazu, na pograniczu euro-azjatyckim: Gruzji, Azerbejdżanu i Armenii.Region ten obejmuje powierzchnię 186 100 km² z liczbą ludności wynoszącą 16 mln mieszkańców (2003).

Закавка́зье (Южный Кавказ) — регион, расположенный к югу от Главного, или Водораздельного, хребта Большого Кавказа. К Закавказью относятся большая часть южного склона Большого Кавказа, Колхидская низменность и Куринская впадина, Карабахские горы, Джавахетско-Армянское нагорье, Талышские горы с Ленкоранской низменностью. В пределах Закавказья расположены основные части Грузии, Азербайджана и Армении.
