South America

South America is a continent of the Americas, situated entirely in the Western Hemisphere and mostly in the Southern Hemisphere. It is bordered on the west by the Pacific Ocean and on the north and east by the Atlantic Ocean; North America and the Caribbean Sea lie to the northwest.South America was named in 1507 by cartographers Martin Waldseemüller and Matthias Ringmann after Amerigo Vespucci, who was the first European to suggest that the Americas were not the East Indies, but a New World unknown to Europeans. South America has an area of 17,840,000 square kilometers (6,890,000 sq mi), or almost 3.5% of the Earth's surface. As of 2005, its population was estimated at more than 371,000,000. South America ranks fourth in area (after Asia, Africa, and North America) and fifth in population (after Asia, Africa, Europe, and North America).

L'Amérique du Sud est un sous-continent ou la partie méridionale de l'Amérique, selon le point de vue. Le continent est situé entièrement dans l'hémisphère Ouest et principalement dans l'hémisphère Sud. Il est bordé à l'ouest par l'océan Pacifique et au nord et à l'est par l'océan Atlantique. L'Amérique centrale et les Caraïbes sont situées au nord-est.

Südamerika ist mit einer Fläche von 17.843.000 km² und einer Bevölkerung von 355.070.540 Menschen der viertgrößte Kontinent der Erde.1494 wurde Südamerika im Vertrag von Tordesillas von Papst Alexander VI. zwischen Spanien und Portugal aufgeteilt. Der östliche Teil, auf dem sich heute Brasilien befindet, wurde Portugal zugeschlagen, der westliche Spanien. Deshalb wird in Brasilien heute Portugiesisch gesprochen, während in fast allen anderen südamerikanischen Staaten die Landessprache Spanisch ist. Lediglich in Suriname wird Niederländisch als offizielle Landessprache, und Sranan Tongo als Lingua franca gesprochen, in Guyana Englisch und in Französisch-Guayana, das jedoch kein selbständiger Staat, sondern ein französisches Überseedepartement ist, Französisch.
