The South Island (Maori: Te Wai Pounamu) is the larger of the two major islands of New Zealand, the other being the more populous North Island. It is bordered to the north by Cook Strait, to the west by the Tasman Sea, to the south and east by the Pacific Ocean. The territory of the South Island covers and is influenced by a temperate climate.

Die Südinsel Neuseelands hat eine Fläche von 151.757 km² und wird durch die 35 km breite Cookstraße von der dichter besiedelten Nordinsel getrennt. Auf ihr liegt in den Neuseeländischen Alpen der Mount Cook, mit 3.754 m der höchste Gipfel Neuseelands sowie Ozeaniens. Im Osten der Insel befinden sich dagegen die sanft abfallenden Canterbury Plains und im Süden zahlreiche Fjorde. Die größten Städte der Südinsel sind Christchurch und Dunedin.

L'île du Sud (en anglais : South Island) est l'une des deux îles principales de la Nouvelle-Zélande, l'autre étant l'île du Nord.

Sydön är den största av Nya Zeelands öar med en yta på 151 215 km². Öns namn på maori är Te Wai Pounamu, som betyder "Grönstensvattnet", där "grönsten" syftar på jade, eller Te Waka a Maui, som betyder "Mauis kanot". Sydön hyser ungefär 25 % av landets befolkning.

Wyspa Południowa (maorys. Te Wai Pounamu lub Tavai Poenammoo tj. "Wody Szmaragdów", czasem też Te Waka a Māui, "Łódź Māui") – jedna z wysp Nowej Zelandii o powierzchni 150 523 km². Położona jest pomiędzy Morzem Tasmana a Oceanem Spokojnym. Od Wyspy Północnej oddzielona jest cieśniną Cooka.
