South Asia, also known as Southern Asia or the Indian Subcontinent, is the southern region of the Asian continent, which comprises the sub-Himalayan countries and, for some authorities (see below), also includes the adjoining countries to the west and the east. Topographically, it is dominated by the Indian Plate, which rises above sea level as the Indian subcontinent south of the Himalayas and the Hindu Kush. South Asia is surrounded (clockwise, from west) by Western Asia, Central Asia, Eastern Asia, Southeastern Asia and the Indian Ocean.

Südasien ist ein Teil des asiatischen Kontinents und wird im Nordwesten, Norden und Nordosten durch Gebirge vom übrigen Asien abgetrennt. Der Raum wird bis heute, obwohl das teilweise als veraltet gilt, auch als Vorderindien bezeichnet, es bestehen weitreichende Überlappungen zwischen den Begriffen mittlerer Osten und Südasien.

Sydasien är den södra delen av världsdelen Asien. Till Sydasien räknas oftast Indien, Pakistan, Iran, Bhutan, Nepal, Maldiverna, Bangladesh och Sri Lanka. Av kulturhistoriska skäl hänförs ibland Burma till Sydasien, liksom Tibet. FN räknar i sin regionindelning dessutom in Iran och Afghanistan.

Azja Południowa – region Azji obejmujący kraje subkontynentu indyjskiego na południe od Himalajów, czyli: Indie, Nepal, Bhutan, Bangladesz oraz wyspiarskie państwa Sri Lankę i Malediwy.

Zuid-Azië of Zuidelijk Azië wordt in het noordoosten, noorden en het noordwesten door bergen afgescheiden van de rest van Azië. Het wordt soms ook als het Indische subcontinent aangeduid. Normaal gesproken wordt met Zuid-Azië de volgende gebieden bedoeld:

• De landen op het vasteland; India, Pakistan, Nepal, Bhutan en Bangladesh
• De landen in de Indische Oceaan; Sri Lanka en de Maldiven.
