Soukous (also known as Lingala and Congo) is a dance music musical genre that originated in the two neighbouring countries of Belgian Congo and French Congo during the 1930s and early 1940s, and which has gained popularity throughout Africa. "Soukous" (a derivative of the French word secousse, "shake") was originally the name of a dance popular in the Congos in the late 1960s, an African version of rumba. Although the genre was initially known as rumba (sometimes termed specifically as African rumba), the term "soukous" has come to refer to African rumba and its subsequent developments.

Soukous, auch Rumba Lingala; ist ein ursprünglicher Musikstil der traditionellen afrikanischen Musik aus der Kongo-Region. Der Soukous beeinflusste vor allem den Merengue in der Dominikanischen Republik. Seine Ursprünge liegen in den 1930er und 1940er Jahren. Nach 1960 wurde der Begriff Soukous auch für einen in ganz Afrika sehr populären afrikanischen Tanz verwendet, der auf eine für Afrika spezifische Variante des Rumba getanzt wurde.

Soukous (från det franska ordet secouer som betyder skaka) är en musikstil som uppstod i Kongo-Kinshasa och Kongo-Brazzaville i början av 1900-talet. Den utvecklades ur en afrikansk variant av rumba. På 1940-talet ledde framväxten av inspelningsstudior och radiostationer samt elgitarrens genombrott till att soukous fick ett modernare sound. Den spelades av stora orkestrar med sångare, congas, gitarr och bas.

La rumba africana (nota anche come soukous, lingala o congo) è un genere musicale nato negli anni '30 nel Congo Belga e nel Congo Francese, e in seguito diffusosi in tutta l'Africa. È stato fra i generi musicali che hanno maggiormente segnato la storia della musica africana di epoca coloniale e post-coloniale; ha dato origine a numerosi sottogeneri e influenzato la musica leggera e pop di moltissimi paesi.
