Sofia

Sofia , is the capital and largest city of the Republic of Bulgaria, with a population of 1,270,450 (making it the 14th largest city in the European Union), and some 1,380,406 in the metropolitan area, the Capital Municipality. It is located in western Bulgaria, at the foot of the mountain massif Vitosha, and is the administrative, cultural, economic, and educational centre of the country.

Das Stratospheric Observatory For Infrared Astronomy (SOFIA) ist ein fliegendes Teleskop, das die NASA gemeinsam mit dem Deutschen Zentrum für Luft- und Raumfahrt (DLR) für Infrarotastronomie entwickelt hat. Dafür wurde an Bord einer umgebauten Boeing 747SP ein Spiegelteleskop installiert. Das Flugzeug wird vom Nasa-Ames-Research-Center in Moffett Field, Kalifornien betrieben. An drei bis vier Nächten pro Woche sollen jeweils bis zu acht Stunden aus 12 bis 14 Kilometern Höhe beobachtet werden. SOFIA ist für eine Betriebsdauer von 20 Jahren ausgelegt. Es löst seinen Vorgänger, das Kuiper Airborne Observatory (KAO) ab, das von 1974 bis 1995 im Einsatz war.

SOFIA (ang. Stratospheric Observatory For Infrared Astronomy), Stratosferyczne Obserwatorium Astronomii Podczerwonej – to powietrzne obserwatorium NASA wyposażone w teleskop o średnicy zwierciadła wynoszącej 2,5 metra (8,2 stopy), pracujący w zakresie promieniowania podczerwonego.Lustro zwierciadła wykonane zostało ze specjalnego materiału - szkła ceramicznego zwanego Zerodur - i pokryta warstwą odbiciową aluminium (o grubości 1/300 średnicy ludzkiego włosa.).SOFIA jest największym podniebnym obserwatorium na świecie. Będzie pracować na wysokości powyżej 12 000 metrów (ponieważ, na małych wysokościach, para wodna ziemskiej troposfery blokuje światło podczerwone) w specjalnie przystosowanym do tego celu Boeingu 747SP.

Sófia (in bulgaro София, Sofija) è la capitale della Bulgaria, uno stato dell'Europa sudorientale. È il principale centro amministrativo, industriale, universitario e dei trasporti di tutto il paese. Con una popolazione di quasi 1,3 milioni di abitanti a cui se ne aggiungono altrettanti considerando l'area metropolitana, è anche la città più estesa e densamente popolata della repubblica di Bulgaria. È situata nella parte occidentale del paese, ai piedi del monte Vitoša. La città conta sedici istituti universitari, tra cui l'Università di Sofia, fondata nel 1889. La città è sede di un metropolita ortodosso e di una diocesi cattolica. Tra le attrazioni principali troviamo la chiesa di San Giorgio, la chiesa di Santa Sofia, il Banja Baši, e la cattedrale di Aleksandăr Nevski.
