This page is about the
Classical Greek philosopher. For the Portuguese prime minister, see
José Sócrates. For other uses of Socrates, see
Socrates (disambiguation). Socrates (
Greek: , invariably
anglicized as , Sǒcratēs, SOCK-ruh-teez; c.
470 BC–
399 BCE) was a
Classical Greek philosopher. The most reliable source of information concerning Socrates is
Plato. However, classical scholars disagree as to whether a historically accurate portrayal of Socrates can be extracted from any of the sources. Even Plato is alleged to create an incompatible portrayal of Socrates: his dialogues portray Socrates as a teacher who denies having disciples, as a man of reason who obeys a divine voice in his head, and a
pious man who is executed for the state's own expediency; Socrates disparages the pleasures of the senses, yet is excited by beauty; he is devoted to the education of the citizens of
Athens, yet indifferent to his own sons.

February 19,
1954), more commonly known simply as Sócrates, is a former
Brazilian football player. His ability to read the game was highly valued, and his signature move was the blind
heel pass. Sócrates is a
doctor of medicine, a rare achievement for a professional soccer player (he is a graduate of the
Faculdade de Medicina de Ribeirão Preto. Even rarer is the fact that he earned the degree while concurrently playing professional soccer. He is also noted for being an intellectual (he holds a
doctorate degree in philosophy), a heavy drinker and smoker, and for his height (192 cm, 6 ft 4 in). Contrary to a popular rumour, Sócrates never played
University College Dublin F.C. while a student in Ireland. His brother
Raí won the World Cup in 1994 and played for São Paulo and for Paris St. Germain.
