Smyrna (Greek: Σμύρνη) is an ancient city (today  İzmir in Turkey) that was founded at a very early period at a central and strategic point on the Aegean coast of Anatolia. Aided by its advantageous port conditions, its ease of defence and its good inland connections, Smyrna rose to prominence before the Classical Era. Its importance can be said to have remained practically uninterrupted to this day. Its initial location at the northeastern corner of the tip of the Gulf of Smyrna is commonly called "Old Smyrna", and the city after the move to a new location on the slopes of Mount Pagos (Kadifekale today) at the time of Alexander the Great, constitute Smyrna proper. The heart of that new city, principally dating from the late Hellenistic and early Roman period, before a great earthquake in 178, forms the large area of İzmir Agora Open Air Museum today (see below).

Izmir ist eine türkische Metropole an der Ägäisküste am Golf von Izmir.Izmir wird auch als „Perle der Ägäis“ bezeichnet. Die Stadt war früher auch unter dem griechischen Namen Smyrna bekannt ( bzw. Smirni) und hat nach Istanbul den zweitgrößten Hafen des Landes. Bis 1922 war Izmir hauptsächlich von Griechen und Armeniern bewohnt. Im Osmanischen Reich nannten die Türken die Stadt Gavur Izmir (ungläubiges Izmir), weil dort die Christen eindeutig die Mehrheit bildeten. (Laut Archiv lebten um 1918 155.000 orthodoxe Griechen, 44.000 muslimische Türken, 21.000 Juden, 10.000 Armenier, 50.000 Ausländer - hauptsächlich Briten, Franzosen, Deutsche und Italiener)

Smirne (in turco ottomano إزمير İzmir, in greco Σμύρνη, Smyrne) è una città (3.509.000 abitanti) della Turchia centro-occidentale, la terza del paese per numero di abitanti dopo Istanbul e Ankara. È anche un grande ed efficiente porto situato sull'omonimo golfo, nel Mar Egeo. È formata da 9 distretti metropolitani (Balçova, Bornova, Çiğli, Gaziemir, Güzelbahçe, Karşıyaka, Konak e Narlıdere). Smirne è la città natale del poeta antico Omero e di Bione.

Izmir (Turks: İzmir; voorheen: Smyrna; Grieks Σμύρνη) is een stad in het westen van Turkije. Het is de hoofdstad van de gelijknamige provincie Izmir. In 2003 had Izmir ongeveer 2.480.000 inwoners. Hiermee is het de op twee na grootste stad van Turkije.Izmir ligt aan de Egeïsche Zee, aan de Golf van Izmir. Na de haven van Istanbul is die van Izmir de belangrijkste van het land. Verder bevindt zich een internationaal vliegveld bij de stad. Er zijn treinverbindingen met steden in de rest van het land, zoals Istanbul en Denizli.
