Sir is a title of respect used in several modern contexts. It was once used (without the person's name) as a courtesy title among equals, but in common usage it is now usually reserved for one of superior rank or status, such as an educator or commanding officer, or in age (especially by a minor); as a form of address from a merchant to a customer; in formal correspondence (Dear Sir, Right Reverend Sir); or to a stranger (Sir, you've dropped your hat).

Sir (von franz. Sire „Feudalherr; Titel eines Monarchen“; von vulgärlat. *seior, Nebenform zu klass.-lat. senior „älterer“) ist ein englischer Ehrentitel für männliche Personen. Der entsprechende Titel für Frauen ist Dame. Die Ehefrau eines Mannes, der den Ehrentitel führt, wird als Lady bezeichnet.Der Titel wird wie folgt verwendet:im englischsprachigen Raum zur höflichen Anrede von (militärischen) Vorgesetzten und Fremden. In diesem Fall ist die weibliche Form Ma'am.im Vereinigten Königreich und im Commonwealth als Titel eines Knights oder Baronets (siehe zum Beispiel Order of the British Empire, Order of St. Michael and St. George und Knight Bachelor). Der Titel eines Sirs oder einer Dame wird immer vor den Namen gestellt und bei der Anrede auf den Vornamen beschränkt. Sir Paul McCartney ist also Sir Paul und nicht Sir McCartney.

Sir - angielski tytuł honorowy, wywodzący się ze średniowiecznego angielskiego sire (fr. sieur) oznaczającego lorda. Etymologicznie słowo to wywodzi się z łacińskiego senior. W formalnej tytulaturze szlacheckiej tytułu sir (pisanego dużą literą: Sir) używa się w stosunku do rycerza lub baroneta, zawsze w połączeniu z pełnym imieniem i nazwiskiem, ewentualnie samym imieniem, nigdy z samym nazwiskiem. Zwyczajowo tytułu tego używa się tylko wobec poddanych monarchy brytyjskiego, w tym również pochodzących z innych niż Wielka Brytania państw o statusie Commonwealth realm. Tytułu tego używa się także w wojsku, dawniej przy zwracaniu się do przełożonego oficera, obecnie także używany wobec starszych podoficerów. Obecnie termin sir pełni również funkcję grzecznościową i używany jest w kontaktach służbowych, w oficjalnej korespondencji bądź w kontaktach z nieznajomymi.
