Sikhism was established by ten
Gurus (literally teachers) over the period of 1469 to
1708. Most of the Gurus were born in
Northern India, notably the
Punjab, although they travelled extensively from as far west as
Arabia to
Assam in the east and
Maharashtra in the south.
Guru Nanak, the first Guru was born in modern day
Pakistan, and
Guru Gobind Singh, the final Guru was born in
Patna,
Bihar. When Guru Gobind Singh left this world (made Sikh ascension), he made the
Sikh holy scripture, the
Guru Granth Sahib, the final and eternal Guru of Sikhism. All
Sikhs are required to follow the teachings of the Gurus, which upon meditation leads to salvation. The Gurus are themselves not considered to be God, or even incarnations of
God, thus rejecting the doctrine of divine incarnations. On the other hand, as
God is believed to be
omnipresent, one can consider each
Guru to be part of
God.
