The sequence of a hydrophobic amino-terminal protein that directs the protein through a particular cellular membrane such as lysosomal membrane. It helps the protein to pass through the membrane via interaction with its receptor on the membrane and is usually cleaved off at the final destination. Sometimes used interchangeably with leader sequence.
