Siberian Husky (More...)
Appearance
The Siberian husky has a double coat of medium length: straight and smooth-lying above, soft and dense underneath. Common colors are gray and white and chestnut and white. Eyes may be brown, blue, one of each, or blue and brown in the same eye. The tail is well furred.
Grooming & Exercise Needs
Siberian huskies need to be brushed a few times a week, daily when shedding. They love long hikes, walks, and backpacking trips, and need to run off-leash in secure areas.
Origins
The Siberian husky, bred more than 3,000 years ago by nomadic Siberian tribes to be a sled dog, was brought to North America by fur traders around the turn of the 20th century.
Special Alerts
Obtain a Siberian husky only from a reputable breeder. This dog is not suitable for inexperienced owners.
Breed-related health concerns: progressive retinal atrophy, corneal dystrophy (degenerative condition causing cloudiness of the cornea or even blindness), glaucoma, discoid lupus (an autoimmune disease causing ulcers on the nose), susceptibility to zinc deficiency.
