Shrike

A shrike is a passerine bird of the family Laniidae which is known for its habit of catching insects, small birds or mammals and impaling their bodies on thorns. This helps them to tear the flesh into smaller, more conveniently-sized fragments, and serves as a "larder" so that the shrike can return to the uneaten portions at a later time. A typical shrike's beak is hooked, like a bird of prey, reflecting its predatory nature.

Die Würger (Laniidae) sind eine Vogelfamilie aus der Ordnung der Sperlingsvögel (Passeriformes). Manchmal werden noch weitere Familien hier einbezogen, die Buschwürger (Malaconotidae), Vangawürger (Vangidae), Schnäpperwürger (Platysteiridae), Brillenwürger (Prionopidae) und Warzenköpfe (Pityriasidae).

Dzierzbowate (Laniidae) - rodzina ptaków z rzędu wróblowych, obejmująca kilkadziesiąt gatunków ptaków. Występują głównie w Eurazji i Afryce, dwa gatunki spotykane są w Ameryce Północnej. Nie ma żadnych przedstawicieli tej rodziny w Ameryce Południowej i Australii. Dzierzbowate polują na owady, gady i inne drobne kręgowce, w tym ssaki. Ich unikalną cechą jest zwyczaj nabijania swoich ofiar na cierń, lub ostrą gałąź. Takie unieruchomienie ofiary ułatwia jej pokawałkowanie na łatwiejsze do spożycia fragmenty. Ciernie wykorzystywane są również jako spiżarnie, dzierzba może wrócić do tak zmagazynowanego pożywienia w późniejszym terminie.
