Short Message Service (SMS) is a text messaging service component of phone, web, or mobile communication systems, using standardized communications protocols that allow the exchange of short text messages between fixed line or mobile phone devices.

Short Message Service
(engl. für „Kurznachrichtendienst“, Abk. SMS) ist ein Telekommunikationsdienst zur Übertragung von Textnachrichten. Er wurde zuerst für den GSM-Mobilfunk entwickelt und ist nun in verschiedenen Ländern auch im Festnetz als Festnetz-SMS verfügbar.

Short message service
Le service de messagerie SMS, plus connu sous le sigle SMS de la désignation anglaise Short Message Service, permet de transmettre de courts messages textuels ; c'est un service proposé conjointement à la téléphonie mobile, voire à d'autres appareils mobiles comme le Pocket PC.

SMS är en förkortning av flera tekniska faciliteter:
- korta mobiltelefonmeddelanden, se vidare Short Message Service

SMS
SMS (ang. Short Message Service) - usługa przesyłania krótkich wiadomości tekstowych w cyfrowych sieciach telefonii komórkowej. Usługa ta jest wprowadzana także do sieci telefonii stacjonarnej.
Wiadomość SMS wysyła się na numer abonenta sieci telefonii komórkowej lub stacjonarnej. Wszystkie produkowane obecnie telefony komórkowe i niektóre telefony używane w sieciach stacjonarnych umożliwiają zarówno odbieranie, jak i wysyłanie tego typu wiadomości. Maksymalna długość pojedynczej wiadomości (potocznie również określanej skrótem SMS) wynosi 160 znaków 7-bitowych lub 140 znaków 8-bitowych. Jednak w przypadku niektórych telefonów mogą być one dłuższe - do ponad 400 znaków (przed wysłaniem zostają podzielone na kilka krótszych wiadomości, a telefon odbiorcy powinien je z powrotem scalić w jedną wiadomość).
