Shelta language

Shelta (also known as Gammen, Sheldru, Pavee, or simply the Cant) is a language spoken by parts of the Irish Traveller people that is often used to conceal the meaning from those outside the group.Sociologist Sharon Gmelch describes the Travellers' language as follows : Much of Shelta's vocabulary is based loosely on Irish, with many words inverted in a style not unlike French verlan slang; for example, the word for 'girl' is lackeen, from the Irish cailín, and the word rodas, meaning door, has its roots in the Irish doras. The language's structure also contains many grammatical similarities with English. It also contains elements of Romany languages (such as the term gadje, "non-Traveller"), though the Travellers are not actual Roma.

Le shelta, cant ou gammon est la langue secrète (cryptolecte) des Travellers irlandais. Son origine n'est pas connue, bien qu'une partie de son lexique soit empruntée au gaélique et une autre à l'anglo-romani. Il est parlé surtout en Irlande, mais aussi au Royaume-Uni et aux États-Unis.

Shelta (auch als Gammen, Sheldru oder Cant bezeichnet) ist eine Mischsprache, die Elemente irisch-gälischen und englischen Ursprungs sowie Merkmale weiterer Sprachen, z.B. des Romani, aufweist. Die Bezeichnung geht wahrscheinlich auf das irische "siúlta", das auf Wanderschaft bedeutet, zurück. Dies bezieht sich auf den nomadischen Lebensstil ihrer Sprecher: Shelta wird von der nicht oder nur teilweise sesshaften Bevölkerung der britischen Inseln, den häufig so genannten Tinkers (Pavee, Travellers) gesprochen.

Język shelta – język celtycki z grupy języków goidelskich. Jest to język wędrownej grupy ludzi (Irish travellers) pochodzącej z Irlandii i zamieszkującej Irlandię, Wielką Brytanię i Stany Zjednoczone. Oparty w dużym stopniu na języku irlandzkim.W chwili obecnej jest używany przez ok. 86 tys. ludzi, w tym 6-25 tys. w Irlandii.

Shelta is een mengtaal die de traditionele taal is van de Irish Travellers, een Ierse bevolkingsgroep met een nomadische levensstijl. Andere namen zijn Gammon, Sheldru of The Cant.De woordenschat is grotendeels gebaseerd op het Iers-Gaelisch (woorden zijn vaak daarvan afgeleid door verwisseling van klanken, zoals ook in het Franse verlan). Grammaticaal zijn er echter veel overeenkomsten met Engels. Ook zijn er wat invloeden van het Romani, hoewel de Irish Travellers zelf geen Roma zijn.
