Originating from glaciers near the Continental Divide within the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge, the Sheenjek River drains the south side of the Brooks Range's highest mountains (the Romanzof Mountains). It eventually flows into the Porcupine River near its junction with the mighty Yukon northeast of Fort Yukon, Alaska. One of the longest protected rivers in the nation, the 205-mile long Sheenjek is designated wild for the 155 miles that it flows through the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge, which has a wide variety of actic habitats and scenery.
