Shanghai (Chinese: ; Pinyin: Shànghǎi; Shanghainese: /zɑ̃'he/; abbreviation: ; nickname: ), situated on the banks of the Yangtze River Delta in East China, is the largest city of the People's Republic of China and the eighth largest in the world. Widely regarded as the citadel of China's modern economy, the city also serves as one of the nation's most important cultural, commercial, financial, industrial and communications centers. Administratively, Shanghai is a municipality of the People's Republic of China that has province-level status. Shanghai is also one of the world's busiest ports, and became the largest cargo port in the world in 2005.

Shanghai ou Chang-hai (en mandarin  ; pinyin : Shànghai ; shanghaïen : zanhe, prononcé [], « sur la mer ») est la ville la plus peuplée de Chine, et une des plus denses avec habitants au kilomètre carré (en 2006). L'émergence de la ville comme centre financier de l'Asie-Pacifique, au et au s'est faite dans la douleur, avec l'occupation étrangère de la ville pendant plusieurs décennies. Dans les années 1920 et 1930, Shanghai a été le théâtre d'un formidable essor culturel qui a beaucoup contribué à l'aura mythique et fantasmatique qui est associée à la ville depuis cette époque. Après la fondation de la République de Chine et la guerre sino-japonaise (1937-1945), l'avènement de la République populaire de Chine a muselé la ville économiquement et culturellement, considérée comme un foyer de bourgeois et de dépravation, jusqu'à ce que Deng Xiaoping en 1992 décide de promouvoir le développement de la ville. Il semble aujourd'hui que la ville soit en passe de retrouver la place de centre financier de l'Asie qu'elle occupait auparavant. Sa croissance à deux chiffres, les 16,7 millions d'habitants de sa région urbaine, sa mutation cosmopolite et son essor culturel l'appellent à devenir une métropole mondiale, aux côtés de New York, Londres ou Paris. Elle accueillera l'Exposition universelle en 2010 et certaines épreuves des JO 2008.

Der Ballungsraum (einschließlich Vororte) hat 15,1 Millionen Einwohner (2007).

Szanghaj to największe miasto w Chińskiej Republice Ludowej, położone w delcie rzeki Jangcy. Miasto jest największym chińskim ośrodkiem gospodarczym, finansowym i komunikacyjnym, a także trzecim co do wielkości (po Rotterdamie i Singapurze) portem morskim na świecie. Szanghaj nie jest jednak - jak się czasem uważa - miastem najludniejszym, bo za takie uchodzi w Chinach Chongqing.
