Siddhārtha Gautama (Sanskrit; Pali: Siddhattha Gotama) was a spiritual teacher from the Indian subcontinent and the founder of Buddhism. He is generally recognized by Buddhists as the supreme Buddha (Sammāsambuddha) of our age. The time of his birth and death are uncertain: a majority of 20th-century historians date his lifetime from around 563 BC to 483 BC, but some more recent scholars have suggested dates around 410 or 400 BCE for his death. Some suggest even later dates. These alternative chronologies, however, have not yet been accepted by all other historians.

Siddhartha Gautama (en pali : Siddhattha Gotama) du clan Sakya, dit Shakyamuni (« sage des Sakya ») ou le Bouddha, fondateur historique d'une communauté de moines errants, qui devint par la suite le bouddhisme (en quoi le bouddhisme se distingue profondément de l'hindouisme), est un chef spirituel (gourou, « maître spirituel » en sanskrit) qui vécut au VI siècle avant l'ère chrétienne.

Siddhartha Gautama (Sanskrit, m., सिद्धार्थ गौतम, Siddhārtha Gautama) (* 563 v. Chr. in Lumbini; † 483 v. Chr.) lehrte als Buddha (wörtlich: Erwachter, siehe auch Bodhi) den Dharma (die Lehre) und wurde damit der Begründer des Buddhismus. Sein Todesjahr 483 v. Chr. galt früher als das älteste sicher datierbare Ereignis der indischen Geschichte, allerdings wird diese Datierung heute stark bezweifelt. In der gegenwärtigen Buddhismusforschung wird seine Lebenszeit etwa ein Jahrhundert später angesetzt.

Budda Siakjamuni (dopuszcza się też pisownie: Sakiamuni, Sakjamuni; Śakjamuni – mędrzec z (rodu) Śakjów) – założyciel jednej z religii powszechnych – buddyzmu. Właściwie nazywał się Siddhartha Gautama z rodu (klanu, plemienia) Śakjów. Był synem Suddhodany – władcy jednego z królestw, leżących u podnóży Himalajów, na granicy dzisiejszego Nepalu i Indii i jego pierwszej żony, królowej Mahamaji. Urodził się w Lumbini. Zmarł w wieku 84 lat. Różne tradycje podają bardzo różne daty urodzenia Buddy Siakiamuniego – źródła indyjskie podają rok 448 p.n.e., greckie 566 p.n.e., a lankijskie 624 p.n.e. (są także głosy, że urodził się ok. 2,5 tys. lat p.n.e.).

Un Buddha —  sanscrito e pāli Buddha (बुद्ध); cinese , abbreviato ; giapponese  abbreviato ; coreano Bulta (불타) abbreviato Bul (불); vietnamita Phật-đà abbreviato Phật — è, come dice il nome, un risvegliato (buddha è infatti il participio passato del sanscrito budh, prendere conoscenza, svegliarsi), ed indica secondo il Buddhismo un essere che ha raggiunto il massimo grado di illuminazione o Bodhi, ed è quindi pronto per lasciare il Saṃsāra e entrare nel Nirvāṇa.
