Shahrestan

A Shahrestan (in Persian شهرستان) is a geographical political division in Iran, an area inside an ostan, and consists of a city centre, few bakhsh and many villages around them. The world Shahrestan comes from the Persian language words: shahr and ostan which means city (or town) and province respectively. The nearest equivalent of Shahrestan in English would be sub-province or county.

Shahrestan (persisk شهرستان) er en geografisk, politisk enhed i  Iran, et område i en ostan som er betegnelsen for en provins i Iran, hvoraf der er 30. En Shahrestan har en hovedby, nogle få bakhsh og mange landsbyer. Ordet Shahrestan er sammensat de to persiske ord shahr og ostan, som betyder henholdsvis by og provins. På dansk er det nærmeste måske amt eller region.
