Seventeen Provinces

The Seventeen Provinces were a personal union of states in the Low Countries in the 15th century and 16th century, roughly covering the current Netherlands, Belgium, Luxembourg, a good part of the North of France (Artois, Nord) and a small part of the West of Germany. The Seventeen Provinces was the name originally given to this personal union, when it was held by the  Dukes of Burgundy of the House of Valois. Once the personal union fell to the Archdukes of Austria of the House of Habsburg the name Burgundian Circle was introduced.

Les Dix-sept Provinces désignent, au et , les territoires regroupés par les ducs de Bourgogne et l'empereur Charles Quint, qui en fit un État. La plupart de ces provinces ont été des fiefs du Saint-Empire romain ; les comtés de Flandre et d'Artois étaient à l'origine des fiefs français qui furent cédés au traité de Cambrai en 1529. En  1512, les provinces constituaient la majeure partie du Cercle de Bourgogne.

De Zeventien Provinciën is een term voor het geheel van vorstendommen dat in de loop van de 14e tot 16e eeuw in handen kwam van de Bourgondische hertogen als de landen van herwaarts over.
