Serology is the scientific study of blood serum and other bodily fluids. In practice, the term usually refers to the diagnostic identification of antibodies in the serum. Such antibodies are typically formed in response to an infection (against a given microorganism), against other foreign proteins (in response, for example, to a mismatched blood transfusion), or to one's own proteins (in instances of autoimmune disease).

Als Serologie bezeichnet man die Wissenschaft und Lehre von den Antigen-Antikörper-Reaktionen, soweit sie in vitro ablaufen. Sie ist demnach ein Teilgebiet der Immunologie.

La sérologie est la mise en évidence et éventuellement le dosage d'anticorps spécifiques. Elle est donc liée à l'étude des immunoglobulines du sérum sanguin ou d'autres liquides organiques. Elle est utilisée comme outil diagnostic, comme outil de dépistage (SIDA, Hépatite,…) et comme outil épidémiologique.

Serologia – to dziedzina  nauk medycznych, część immunologii, zajmująca się interakcją pomiędzy antygenami i przeciwciałami, jak również rozwojem metod badania obecności antygenów oraz przeciwciał i tym samym identyfikację patogenu lub przeciwciał we krwi, umożliwiając  diagnostykę niektórych chorób (np. boreliozy albo syfilisu). Naturalnie też badanie serologiczne ma swoje ograniczenia, mianowicie: zainfekowany organizm musiał już przed badaniem wytworzyć przeciwciała w wystarczającej koncentracji.
