Sedimentary rocks are types of rock that are formed by the deposition of material at the Earth's surface and within bodies of water. Sedimentation is the collective name for processes that cause mineral and/or organic particles (detritus) to settle and accumulate or minerals to precipitate from a solution. Particles that form a sedimentary rock by accumulating are called sediment. Before being deposited, sediment was formed by weathering and erosion in a source area, and then transported to the place of deposition by water, wind, ice, mass movement or glaciers which are called agents of denudation.

Sedimente und Sedimentgesteine, auch Ablagerungsgesteine oder Schichtgesteine, entstehen durch Sedimentation, also die Ablagerung von Bodenmaterial an Land und im Meer (terrestrische und marine Sedimente). Diese Entstehung unterscheidet sie von Eruptivgestein, das durch rasche Abkühlung einer Gesteinsschmelze an der Erdoberfläche entstanden ist.

Sedimentär bergart, i äldre litteratur även sedimentbergart, är en av de tre övergripande bergartsgrupperna vid sidan av magmatiska och metamorfa bergarter. Sedimentära bergarter förekommer på alla jordens kontinenter, men utgör bara omkring fem procent av jordskorpan eftersom de genom tektonik omvandlas till metamorfa bergarter. Vanliga sedimentära bergarter är kalksten, gråvacka, sandsten och skiffer. Den relativt låga halten av koldioxid i jordens atmosfär beror på att en stor andel kol (genom kolcykeln) finns bundet i kalksten och dolomit.

Skały osadowe (sedymentacyjne) - jeden z trzech głównych typów skał (obok skał magmowych i metamorficznych) budujących skorupę ziemską, powstają przez nagromadzenie się materiału przynoszonego przez czynniki zewnętrzne (np. wodę, lodowiec, wiatr), na skutek jego osadzania się lub wytrącania z roztworu wodnego.
