Second Red Scare

McCarthyism is the term describing a period of intense anti-Communist suspicion in the United States that lasted roughly from the late 1940s to the late 1950s. This period is also referred to as the Second Red Scare, and coincided with increased fears about Communist influence on American institutions and espionage by Soviet agents. Originally coined to criticize the actions of U.S. Senator Joseph McCarthy, "McCarthyism" later took on a more general meaning, not necessarily referring to the conduct of Joseph McCarthy alone.

Le maccarthisme (ou maccarthysme) est un épisode de l'histoire américaine, connue également sous le nom de « Peur Rouge » (Red Scare), qui s'étala approximativement de 1947 à 1953. Elle désigne non seulement la procédure inquisitoriale menée par la commission du Sénateur Joseph McCarthy consistant à traquer d'éventuels agents, militants ou sympathisants communistes aux États-Unis mais également une ambiance politique consistant à réduire l'expression d'opinions politiques ou sociales jugées défavorables, en limitant les droits civiques sous le motif de défendre la sécurité nationale.

Maccartyzm - ogólna nazwa na zespół działań politycznych zainicjowanych przez specjalną komisję Senatu USA, Senate Internal Security Subcommittee (Senacki Podkomitet Bezpieczeństwa Wewnętrznego) powstałą 21 grudnia 1950 roku, której przewodniczącym i inicjatorem był senator Patrick McCarran, wspierany bezpośrednio przez prezydenta Harry'ego Trumana, natomiast sekretarzem Joseph Raymond McCarthy, od którego nazwiska pochodzi nazwa tego ruchu. Termin ten został po raz pierwszy użyty przez satyryka Herberta Blocka z Washington Post, 29 marca 1950 r. Innymi ważnnymi organizacjami maccartyzmu były: House Un-American Activities Committee (Komisja Izby Reprezentantów do Badania Działalności Antyamerykańskiej) oraz Senate Permanent Subcommittee on Investigations (Stała Senacka Podkomisja Śledcza).

Il termine "Paura rossa" (in inglese Red Scare) è stato applicato a due distinti periodi di intenso anticomunismo nella storia degli Stati Uniti: dal 1917 al 1920 e durante i primi anni '50. Entrambi i periodi furono caratterizzati da una diffusa paura dell'influenza dei comunisti sulla società statunitense e dell'infiltrazione comunista nel governo USA. Queste paure spronarono investigazioni aggressive e (particolarmente nel periodo 1917-1920) l'imprigionamento di persone che si riteneva fossero motivate dall'ideologia comunista o associate a movimenti politici comunisti o socialisti.

De term "Rode Angst" (Engels: Red Scare) wordt gegeven aan twee perioden van sterk anti-communisme in de geschiedenis van de Verenigde Staten: van 1917 tot 1920 en vanaf de late jaren van 1940 tot het midden van de jaren 1950 die tekenend waren voor de intrede van de Koude Oorlog.Beide perioden werden gekenmerkt door de verdenking van wijdverbreide infiltratie door communisten en angst voor communistische invloeden op de maatschappij van de V.S. De eerste Rode Angst hield ook angst voor anarchisten en agressieve vakbonden in; de tweede angst voor infiltratie binnen de regering van de V.S.
