Schwann cells or neurolemmocytes are the principal glia of the peripheral nervous system (PNS). Glial cells function to support neurons and in the PNS, also include satellite cells, olfactory ensheathing cells, enteric glia and glia that reside at sensory nerve endings, such as the Pacinian corpuscle. There are two types of Schwann cell, myelinating and nonmyelinating. Myelinating Schwann cells wrap around axons of motor and sensory neurons to form the myelin sheath.

Bei der Schwann-Zelle (Gliocytus periphericus) handelt es sich um eine spezielle Form einer Gliazelle. Sie bildet eine Hüll- und Stützzelle, die das Axon einer Nervenzelle im peripheren Verlauf umhüllt und bei markhaltigen Fasern durch eine Myelinhülle elektrisch isoliert. Ihren Namen hat sie von ihrem Entdecker, dem deutschen Anatomen und Physiologen Theodor Schwann (1810-1882).

Les cellules de Schwann, comme les oligodendrocytes, assurent la myélinisation des axones, c'est-à-dire leur isolation électrique. Il existe néanmoins de petites différences entre ces deux types de cellules :

• elles n'existent qu'au niveau du SNP (oligodendrocytes dans le SNC);
• elles forment la gaine de myéline autour d'un seul axone, alors que les oligodendrocytes peuvent myéliniser plusieurs axones.

Schwanncellen zijn gliacellen die geassocieerd zijn met de axon van sommige zenuwcellen. Elke cel vormt 1 segment van een myelineschede, en tussen elk segment vindt men de knopen van Ranvier. Schwanncellen verzorgen alleen de myelinisatie in het perifeer zenuwstelsel, in het centraal zenuwstelsel zorgen oligodendrocieten hiervoor.
