Scalable Software Systems
Software (e.g., a data base management system, such as MS SQL Server or Oracle) that can be expanded to meet future requirements without the need to restructure its operation (e.g., split data into smaller segments) to avoid a degradation of its performance. For example, a scalable network allows the network administrator to add many additional nodes without the need to redesign the basic system. An example of a non-scalable architecture is the DOS directory structure (adding files will eventually require splitting them into subdirectories). See also Enterprise-Wide Systems .
