Saxony-Anhalt (in German, Sachsen-Anhalt) is one of the sixteen Bundesländer (federal states) that make up the Federal Republic of Germany. It has an area of 20,447 km², and a population of 2.45 million (more than 2.8 million in 1990). Its capital is Magdeburg. The state's name is sometimes spelled Saxony Anhalt in English (without the hyphen).
