Sarabande

In music, the sarabande (It., sarabanda) is a slow dance in triple metre with the distinctive feature that beats 2 and 3 of the measure are often tied, giving a distinctive rhythm of quarter and half notes in alternation. The half notes are said to have corresponded with dragging steps in the dance.

Die Sarabande ist seit etwa 1650 als höfische Tanzform der Barockmusik ein häufiger, ursprünglich fester Kernsatz der barocken Suite:Allemande — Courante — Sarabande — Gigue.Die Sarabande soll sich aus einem andalusischen Fruchtbarkeitstanz entwickelt haben, dessen Herkunft entweder aus der arabischen Refrainform oder aus mexikanischen Quellen abzuleiten ist. Die Bezeichnung tritt 1569 in Spanien auf im Zusammenhang mit einer Sarabande von Pedro de Trejo, die zum Fronleichnamsfest gesungen wurde. Noch ältere Quellen deuten auf einen lateinamerikanischen Ursprung hin: Ein Gedicht aus Panama von Fernando Guzmán Mexía von 1539 erwähnt einen Tanz namens Zarabanda.

Sarabanda - Powolny taniec dworski pochodzenia hiszpańskiego, tańczony także we Włoszech i Francji. Ze względu na przesycone erotyką pozy tańczących, pozostawał przez wiele lat tańcem zabronionym w katolickiej Hiszpanii. Integralna, najwolniejsza część suity barokowej. Zwykle w formie  dwuczęściowej. Spotykana w twórczości Bacha, Haydna aż do współczesności. Przykładem inspiracji sarabandą jest progresywny album Jona Lorda Sarabande.

In musica la sarabanda è una danza in tempo ternario con la caratteristica che i secondi e terzi accenti della battuta sono spesso legati, così da produrre un ritmo particolare di semiminime e minime alternate. Le semiminime sono ritenute corrispondere ai passi trascinati nella danza.
