Sanyaku

Makuuchi or makunouchi , is the top division of professional sumo. Its size is fixed at 42 wrestlers, ordered into five ranks according to their ability as defined by their performance in previous tournaments.This is the only division that is featured on NHK's standard live coverage of sumo tournaments. The lower divisions are shown on their BS satellite coverage, with only makuuchi broadcast with bilingual commentary.Makuuchi literally means "inside the curtain", a reference to the early period of professional sumo, when there was a curtained-off area reserved for the top ranked wrestlers to sit prior to appearing for their bouts.

Sanyaku (三役) bedeutet wörtlich übersetzt "Drei Ränge" und bezeichnet die Meisterränge, die die höchsten in der Hierarchie des Sumō sind.Trotz des Namens werden heute vier Ränge zu den Sanyaku gezählt. Diese sind in absteigender Reihenfolge Yokozuna, Ōzeki, Sekiwake und Komusubi. Der Grund für diese numerische Abweichung liegt darin, dass der Yokozuna traditionell als ein Ōzeki mit besonderem Status betrachtet wurde, der ihm besondere zeremonielle Rechte verleiht.

Sanyaku Jest to określenie w sumo oznaczające zapaśników rangi mistrzowskiej Komusubi Sekiwake Ozeki i Yokozuna. Do grupy Sanyaku mogą awansować zawodnicy rangi Maegashira poprzez wygranie minimum 8 z 15 walk w turnieju basho. Skala awansu zależy od wielu skomplikowanych czynników takich jak ranga przeciwnika, jego wyniki w ostatnich turniejach liczba wygranych turniejów itp.
