Literature in Sanskrit begins with the Vedas, and continues with the Sanskrit Epics of Iron Age India; the golden age of Classical Sanskrit literature dates to late Antiquity (roughly the 3rd to 8th centuries AD). Literary production saw a late bloom in the 11th century before declining after 1100 AD. There are contemporary efforts towards revival, with events like the "All-India Sanskrit Festival" (since 2002) holding composition contests. Vedic Sanskrit scholar Nicholas Kazanas asserts that beginnings of Sanskrit literature were found between 4000BC and 2000BC, which would make Vedic literature some of the earliest in world history if correct.

Die Sanskrit-Dichtung umfasst neben den in Sanskrit verfassten literarischen Werke Indiens wie den Veden und Upanishaden eine Fülle an Kunst- bzw. Versdichtung. Im Folgenden wird die schriftlich überlieferte Tradition der hinduistisch geprägten Sanskrit-Dichtung (Beginn: ca. 500 v. Chr.) in Indien, welche selbst über die muslimische Mogulherrschaft und die Kolonialisierung durch England (18./19.Jh.) hinaus Bestand hatte. Der Artikel ist chronologisch gegliedert.
