Samuel started his professional career with Newell's, where he played 1 and a half years, before moving to Boca. He was transferred to Boca in the Apertura '97, and he settled as a very important player in the defensive line of the Boca team. In 1997, Walter was member of the Argentine team that won the U-20 World Cup in Malaysia, he also scored in his international senior debut and take part in the Copa America of '99. Scored the goal which gived Boca their pass to the final of the Libertadores. He won the Apertura, Clausura and Libertadores Cup, while playing with the 'Xeneises'.
