Samarkand (; ; ; from Sogdian: "Stone Fort" or "Rock Town") is the second-largest city in Uzbekistan and the capital of Samarqand Province. The city is most noted for its central position on the Silk Road between China and the West, and for being an Islamic centre for scholarly study. In the 14th century it became the capital of the empire of Timur (Tamerlane) and is the site of his mausoleum (the Gur-e Amir). The Bibi-Khanym Mosque remains one of the city's most notable landmarks. The Registan was the ancient center of the city.

Samarcande, parfois écrit Samarkand (forme anglaise) (ouzbek : Samarqand, tadjik : Самарқанд, russe : Самарканд, perse : سمرقند), population  habitants, est une ville d'Ouzbékistan, capitale de la région de Samarcande (Samarqand Viloyati). Son nom signifie probablement « lieu de la rencontre » ou « lieu du conflit » (samara : rencontre, conflit en sanskrit, kand, kent : ville, terme centre-asiatique) et illustre bien sa position à la limite des mondes turc et persan.

Samarkand (uzbekiska: Samarqand eller Самарқанд) är den näst största staden i Uzbekistan med omkring 319 400 invånare år 2005, med förorter omkring 412 300 invånare med samma år. Den är huvudstad i provinsen Samarkand, och ligger vid Zeravsjan, en biflod till Amu-Darja.

Samarkanda (uzbec. Samarqand, tadżyc. Самарқанд, pers. سمرقند, ros. Самарканд) - miasto w Uzbekistanie, w Azji Środkowej, ok. 412 tys. mieszkańców (2005). Drugie pod względem ludności miasto Uzbekistanu i stolica wilajetu samarkandzkiego. Ważny ośrodek przemysłowy i naukowy (6 szkół wyższych). W 2001 roku miasto zostało wpisane na listę światowego dziedzictwa UNESCO.
