Sagamores

n. native Algonquian who is a second rank chief of North America

[Native American] Elected chiefs of the Wabanaki. The sagamores could be deposed if they were behaving badly, but would otherwise serve for life. They generally wielded little power, though the Europeans decided to make them Kings and Queens.
