The bright young hope of Portuguese football is the likely long-term replacement for Luis Figo. A product of the Sporting Clube de Lisbon youth scheme, he switched to FC Barcelona in a big-money summer move. A star of the Portuguese side that reached the final of the European U-18 Championship in 1997, he scored four goals in Portugal’s European U-21 Championship campaign, but has since graduated to the senior side. Capable of playing on either wing, his style is actually quite different to that of Luis Figo, with whom he is inevitably compared.
