It is located in the Baltic Sea, south of Hiiumaa island, and belongs to the west Estonian archipelago. The capital of Saaremaa is Kuressaare, which has about 16,000 inhabitants; the whole island has about 40,000 inhabitants.Saaremaa is the main island of Saare County, called Saaremaa or Saare maakond in Estonian, and in Finnish Saarenmaa — literally isle's land. The Swedish and German name of the island is Ösel, and the Danish is Øsel (where the letters Ö and Ø are pronounced like the u in further and mean island).

Saaremaa (deutsch/schwedisch Ösel, dänisch Øsel, latein Osilia) ist mit etwa 2.673 km² die größte  Insel Estlands. Sie ist die drittgrößte Ostseeinsel nach Seeland und Gotland und begrenzt den Rigaischen Meerbusen (estn. Liivi Laht) in seinen nördlichen Gewässern.

Sarema (est. Saaremaa, szw. Ösel), dawniej zwana Ozylią, jest największą wyspą należąca do Estonii, położoną na Bałtyku na południe od wejścia do Zatoki Fińskiej, odgradzająca Zatokę Ryską od pełnego morza. Od Hiumy oddzielona jest cieśniną Söla Väin, od stałego lądu Cieśniną Irbeńską. Jest największą wyspą Prowincji Saare. Jej powierzchnia wynosi 2673 km2 (91,5% powierzchni prowincji), a liczba ludności 36,9 tys (94,1%).

Saaremaa (in svedese e in tedesco Ösel o Oesel, in latino Osilia) è la più grande isola dell'Estonia (2673 km²) nonché la terza isola più grande del mar Baltico dopo Zelanda e Gotland. Situata a ovest della terraferma estone delimita a settentrione il Golfo di Riga e fa parte dell'arcipelago estone insieme all'isola di Hiiumaa. Il capoluogo di Saaremaa è Kuressaare che ha circa 16.000 abitanti, l'isola nel suo complesso ne ha invece circa 40.000. Secondo alcuni metodi di calcolo, non universalmente accettati, Saaremaa corrisponderebbe al centro geografico dell'Europa.
