The Serial Line Internet Protocol (SLIP) is a mostly obsolete encapsulation of the Internet Protocol designed to work over serial ports and modem connections. It is documented in RFC 1055. On PCs, SLIP has been largely replaced by the Point-to-Point Protocol (PPP), which is better engineered, has more features and does not require its IP address configuration to be set before it is established. On microcontrollers, however, SLIP is still the preferred way of encapsulating IP packets due to its very small overhead.

SLIP bezeichnet ein Netzwerkprotokoll (= Serial Line Internet Protocol).Es wird verwendet, um eine IP-Netzwerkverbindung zwischen zwei Computern herzustellen, die über eine serielle Schnittstelle verbunden sind. Mittlerweile wird dazu meist das Point-to-Point Protocol (PPP) verwendet.SLIP geht den einfachstmöglichen Weg einer solchen Verbindung, indem einfach die Oktets eines IP-Pakets über das serielle Kabel gesendet werden. Das Ende des Pakets wird mit dem speziellen END-Zeichen Nr. 192 (Oktalcode 300) gekennzeichnet. Falls dieses Zeichen innerhalb des zu sendenden Pakets auftritt, wird stattdessen die Sequenz 219/220 (Oktal 333+334) und für das Zeichen Nr. 219 selbst die Sequenz 219/221 (Oktal 333+335) übertragen. Das Zeichen Nr. 219 wird ESC-Zeichen genannt.

SLIP (ang. Serial Line Internet Protocol) - protokół używany dawniej przy połączeniach modemowych (połączenia dodzwaniane, ang. dial-up). Obecnie niemal całkowicie zastąpiony przez nowszy i bardziej elastyczny protokół PPP. Działanie protkołu sprowadza się do definicji sposobu ramkowania danych. Nie istnieje wykrywanie ani naprawa błędów. Jedynym jego celem jest wysyłanie pakietów na łącze szeregowe.

Szczecińska Lista Przebojów (SLiP) - jest to audycja muzyczna nadawana co tydzień, w każdy piątek od 19.05 do 22.00 w Polskim Radiu Szczecin.Założona została przez Darka Gibałę. Po raz pierwszy pojawiła się na antenie Radia Szczecin 9 czerwca 1991 roku. Od początku funkcjonuje pod skróconą nazwą SLiP. To jedna z nielicznych list przebojów, łączących w sobie bardzo różne gatunki muzyczne. Początkowo audycja nadawana była w niedziele (emisja godzinna), wówczas jeszcze w Programie IV Polskiego Radia
