Sif
Sif ("relative") is, in
Norse mythology, a
goddess of the
Æsir, wife of
Thor (Þórr) and mother of
Thrud (Þrúðr),
Ullr (Ull) and
Modi (Móði). Thor is not the father of Ullr. Sif was not the mother of
Magni; this was Thor's son with
Járnsaxa.She has hair of
gold which grows just like natural hair, made by the dwarves called "sons of
Ivaldi" (
Dvalin). Her hair's color may have represented ripe wheat.
Loki cut off Sif's hair as a prank, but when Thor found this out he forced Loki to promise to have golden hair made by the
Dwarves. Loki uses this event to taunt Sif and, indirectly, Thor in
Lokasenna.

Sif
Noun
1. (Norse mythology) wife of Thor and guardian of the home
(hypernym) Norse deity
(classification) Norse mythology
Sif
[Norse] The golden-haired wife of the god Thor. There is not much known about her, except that she could originally have been a fertility goddess. Neither does she appear often in the myths. The best know myth, however, is when Loki the Trickster sneaked into Sif's bedroom and lopped off her hair. Furious, Thor threatened to smash him unless Loki managed to replace the hair. He went to a great cave, the home of the sons of Ivaldi, and told them the reason of his journey. He then asked the dwarfs to spin gold as fine as Sif's hair and imbue it with magic that it will grow on her head. The dwarfs agreed and made a long wave of fine golden strands, which Loki gave to Sif.
Sif
Sif (Icelandic) [plural sifjar affinity, kinship] Thor's wife in Norse mythology; the singular form occurs only in the proper name of the goddess whose golden hair is the harvest, pride and joy of all the gods. Sif is guardian of the sanctity of marriage and the ancient law which forbade the union of any couple more closely related than through the fifth generation.
One tale relates how Sif's hair was stolen by Loki who, with the aid of the dwarf Dvalin, was able to restore it.
