SGML

The Standard Generalized Markup Language (SGML) is a metalanguage in which one can define markup languages for documents. SGML is a descendant of IBM's Generalized Markup Language (GML), developed in the 1960s by Charles Goldfarb, Edward Mosher and Raymond Lorie (whose surname initials were used by Goldfarb to make up the term GML). SGML and GML should not be confused with the Game Maker scripting language, or with the Geography Markup Language developed by the Open GIS Consortium.

Standard Generalized Markup Language (SGML, engl., dt. Normierte Verallgemeinerte Auszeichnungssprache) ist eine Metasprache, mit deren Hilfe man verschiedene Auszeichnungssprachen (engl. markup languages) für Dokumente definieren kann. SGML ist ein ISO-Standard: ISO 8879:1986 Information Processing — Text and Office Systems — Standard Generalized Markup Language (SGML). SGML ist weiterhin in der Europäischen Norm EN 28879:1990 und der DIN EN 28873:1991 beschrieben.

SGML (ang. Standard Generalized Markup Language) – standardowy uogólniony język znaczników służący do ujednolicania struktury i formatu różnego typu informacji (danych). Pozwala zapisać je w formie dokumentu tekstowego i dzięki temu łatwo przenosić, wyświetlać i drukować w różnych systemach elektronicznego przekazu danych.

Lo Standard Generalized Markup Language (SGML), è uno standard per la descrizione logica dei documenti.L'idea centrale dello standard è un tipo di marcatura generica chiamata 'marcatura descrittiva' che definisce la struttura logica dei documenti. L'organizzazione di un documento non è espressa usando la codifica dei sistemi di scrittura, che è finalizzata alla presentazione grafica, ma sono evidenziate le parti in cui è strutturato il documento (ad esempio paragrafi, capitoli) insieme ad altre particolarità del testo (come note, tabelle, intestazioni). Sono stati creati a questo scopo programmi come Alml, cioè sistemi di composizione SGML.
