The term is used colloquially as synonymous with ocean, as in "the tropical sea" or "down to the sea shore", or even "sea water" to refer to water of the ocean. Large lakes, such as the Great Lakes, are sometimes referred to as inland seas. Many seas are marginal seas, in which currents are caused by ocean winds; others are mediterranean seas, in which currents are caused by differences in salinity and temperature.

Unter Meer versteht man im Hochdeutschen die miteinander verbundenen Gewässer der Erde, die die Kontinente umgeben, im Gegensatz zu den auf Landflächen liegenden Binnengewässern.Im Niederdeutschen (und ebenso im Niederländischen) sind demgegenüber die Wortbedeutungen von „Meer“ und „See“ vertauscht: die an Norddeutschland angrenzenden Meere heißen Nordsee und Ostsee (die See); im Landesinneren liegen dagegen z. B. das  Steinhuder Meer, das Zwischenahner Meer, das Große Meer und andere; in den Niederlanden wurde die Zuiderzee nach ihrer Eindeichung in IJsselmeer umbenannt.

Ze względu na utrudnioną wymianę wód, morza charakteryzują się indywidualnymi cechami. Zbiór tych cech nazywa się ustrojem hydrologicznym.Ogólna powierzchnia mórz na Ziemi wynosi ok. 40 mln km² (co stanowi ok. 11% powierzchni oceanu światowego).Należy zwrócić uwagę, że tradycyjnie nazywane morzami duże słone jeziora, takie jak Morze Kaspijskie lub Morze Martwe faktycznie nie są morzami, ponieważ nie posiadają połączenia ze światowym wszechoceanem.

Il mare è una vasta distesa di acqua salata a ridosso dei continenti e connessa con un oceano. Lo stesso termine è alle volte usato per indicare laghi, normalmente salati, che non hanno sbocchi sull'oceano: esempi sono il Mar Caspio, il Mar Morto ed il Mar di Galilea. Il termine mare è usato anche come sinonimo di oceano quando esprime un concetto generico, per esempio quando si parla dei mari tropicali o dell'acqua marina riferendosi a quella oceanica in generale.
