A screensaver is a computer program designed to prevent a "Phosphor burn-in" on a CRT and plasma computer monitors by blanking the screen or filling it with moving images or patterns when the computer was not in use. Today, screensavers are also used for entertainment or security purposes.

Un écran de veille est un programme informatique dont le but originel était de préserver la qualité d'image des écrans d'ordinateurs de type cathodique qui conservaient "l'empreinte" des fenêtres de logiciels, en stoppant l'affichage de l'écran (écran noir), ou en changeant les couleurs affichées sur chaque pixel (motifs et animations). Le mot anglais pour les désigner est screensaver, qui littéralement signifie « économiseur d'écran ».

Wygaszacz ekranu (ang. screensaver), program komputerowy, którego zadaniem jest zwiększenie czasu bezawaryjnej pracy monitora poprzez wyłączanie go lub wypełnianie nieustannie, często losowo, zmieniającymi się wzorami lub obrazami. Dzisiaj wygaszacze ekranu pełnią w głównej mierze funkcję rozrywkową.W monitorach CRT obraz powstaje przez bombardowanie luminoforu wiązką elektronów. Podczas wyświetlania obrazu niektóre jego fragmenty (np. pasek startowy w systemie Microsoft Windows) pozostają wyświetlane cały czas tak samo, co w starszych modelach monitorów mogło trwale uszkodzić ("wypalić") luminofor w tych miejscach i doprowadzić do powstania tzw. "obrazów - duchów" - fragmenty te mogą pozostać widoczne, mimo że komputer już ich nie wyświetla.
