scattering
adj.
dispersing, spreading, distributing
n.
dispersal; act of sprinkling; something that is dispersed or sprinkled; small quantity; process by which energy is dispersed as it passes through a medium (Physics)
scatter
v.
sprinkle, disseminate; spread, disperse; be sprinkled
Scattering
Scattering is a general physical process whereby some forms of
radiation, such as
light,
sound or moving particles, for example, are forced to deviate from a straight
trajectory by one or more localized non-uniformities in the medium through which it passes. In conventional use, this also includes deviation of reflected radiation from the angle predicted by the
law of reflection. Reflections that undergo scattering are often called diffuse reflections and unscattered reflections are called specular (mirror-like) reflections.

About
scattering
Of a wave propagating in a material
medium, a phenomenon in which the direction,
frequency, or
polarization of the wave is changed when the wave encounters discontinuities in the medium, or interacts with the material at the atomic or molecular level. (
188 ) Note: Scattering results in a disordered or random change in the incident energy distribution.
