In Greek mythology, Semele, daughter of Cadmus and Harmonia, was the mortal mother of Dionysus by Zeus in one of his many origin myths. (In another version of his mythic origin, he had two mothers, Persephone and Semele.) The name "Semele", like other elements of Dionysiac cult (e.g., thyrsus and dithyramb), is manifestly not Greek but apparently Thraco-Phrygian; the myth of Semele's father Cadmus gives him a Phoenician origin. Herodotus who gives the account of Cadmus estimates that Semele lived sixteen hundred years before his time, or around 2000 B.C.

Semele (gr. ) ist in der griechischen Mythologie die Tochter der Harmonia und des Kadmos, des Gründers von Theben und die Mutter des Dionysos.Die Herleitung des Namens „Semele“ aus einer rekonstruierten phrygischen Lautform zemelos der Bedeutung „Erdenbewohner, Mensch“ wird nach jüngsten Erkenntnissen als widerlegt angesehen. Die indogermanistische Forschung hat inzwischen eine indogermanische Wurzel *tuemelah „die Anschwellende“ wahrscheinlich gemacht. Semele wäre als die schwangere Mutter des Dionysos bezeichnet.

Semele - bogini lunarna w mitologii greckiej, córka Kadmosa i Harmonii, siostra Hyperiona i Tei, kochanka boga Zeusa. Pewnego razu zazdrosna żona Boga piorunów, Hera pod postacią śmiertelniczki namówiła Semele, aby ta wystawiła swego kochanka na próbę - jeśli naprawdę jest bogiem, niech w takim razie ukaże się jej w swej boskiej postaci. Uproszony Zeus wreszcie zgodził się spełnić życzenie i pojawił się przed ukochaną pod postacią piorunów. Rażona piorunem Semele zginęła, ale Zeus uratował jej sześciomiesięczny płód. Zaszył go w swym udzie i wydał na świat małego Dionizosa - przyszłego boga wina i płodności. Semele po śmierci trafiła do Hadesu, ale gdy Dionizos dorósł, zabrał ją stamtąd na Olimp, jako boginię Tyonę.
